BDME is run by Derek McDonald who is an engineering graduate in building related disciplines. His career path to date is as follows:-
1984 to 1987 - GA Group [now BAM] - Engineer / Construction Site Management
1988 to 1990 - Hulley & Kirkwood Consulting Engineers - Teaching Company Associate
1990 to 1995 - GA Group - Project Coordinator
1995 to Date - BDME - Own Practice
Having achieved his first degree in Building, Derek worked on major construction projects for 3 years before returning to academia to gain his MSc in Building Services Engineering. The next two years were spent in consultancy practice researching, specifying and implementing computer aided design, draughting, and specification systems for building services design.
Returning to the GA Group in 1990 a position was taken up for 5 years reporting directly to the company Managing Director. The job remit covered the implementation of design and technology systems within the company and also the co-ordination of a 3 year research and technology transfer covering low energy and environmentally aware buildings.
In 1995 Derek set up BDME as an independent practice which started off offering advanced thermal modelling simulation on large scale projects throughout the UK. Consultancy work covered thermal simulation and modelling, natural ventilation design, summertime overheating risk, and computational fluid dynamics. During the 90's Derek was a Government approved consultant under the EDAS scheme and subsequently under the Carbon Trust. More recently the business focus has been within the domestic sector providing Section 6 support services.
